The Sanctuary is the place where the priest celebrates the Mass. It was built between 1530 and 1596. The keystones are 24 metres high (78ft). It is lit by large stained-glass windows that let in floods of light. Admire the crucifixion window in the centre, Saint George defeating a dragon on the left and the Ascension of Christ on the right. Below the windows you can see a gallery richly decorated with antique patterns: columns, foliage and egg-shaped decorative items. These symbolized fertility for the Greeks and Romans. Such decoration is typical of the Renaissance - a time when stone masons imitated patterns they had seen on antique monuments.
